Before taking a job in another EU country, picture a Monday six weeks after arrival. The novelty has eased. You need to get to work, understand a meeting, buy food and deal with a household problem. That imagined day is a useful test of an offer because it makes daily friction visible before it becomes exhausting.

Map the journey from a realistic housing area, not the city’s central station. Check the door-to-door time and what happens if you finish late. Give rent, deposits and the first month’s expenses their own place in the budget. A salary comparison is incomplete when it leaves out the conditions required to earn it comfortably.

Ask about the unwritten working day

Ask a future colleague how the team actually works: which language people use in meetings, how questions are raised, whether lunch is social and when people normally leave. Ask who will help you understand a payslip or a local document. These are reasonable preparation questions, not signs that you are unready to move.

A welcoming team cannot replace the right insurance or registration, just as a completed form cannot guarantee a sense of belonging.

Build a small support system

Choose a few routines you can repeat: a food shop, a walk, a language class or a weekly activity. Keep contact with people at home, but leave room for relationships where you now live. Learning the words for everyday requests is often more immediately useful than trying to sound fluent in every professional conversation.

Agree a review with yourself after the first month and again later. Separate temporary difficulty from a persistent mismatch. Missing home, getting lost or needing help with a letter does not by itself mean the move was wrong. Repeated problems with pay, housing or support deserve a concrete response. The aim is a life that becomes workable, not a move that looks effortless.
