European options and the jobs they do

Element, built on the Matrix open standard, is the broadest federated alternative for communities and organisations that want interoperable rooms, messaging, and calls. Element is headquartered in the UK with German and French entities, so it is European but not EU-headquartered. Germany-based Nextcloud Talk combines self-hosted chat, calls, webinars, files, calendars, and documents. Wire is controlled through a German parent with Swiss, German, and French subsidiaries and focuses on encrypted organisational communication.

Slack is usually workplace infrastructure; Discord mixes communities, live voice, events, moderation, bots, and creator culture. Replacing either means mapping channels, threads, permissions, guests, search, history, files, identity, bots, calls, mobile notifications, moderation, and integrations. One product may not be the right answer for both jobs.

What to compare before switching

For communication tools, the meaningful questions are who can read message content, what metadata is retained, where the operator is established, whether independent security work exists, and whether the people you need can actually join. A European address helps with jurisdiction, but encryption design and operational transparency matter just as much.

Choose Element and a suitable Matrix host when federation, open standards, cross-organisation communication, and community rooms matter. Use Nextcloud Talk when chat and calls should live beside controlled files, calendars, tasks, and documents. Evaluate Wire when managed security, end-to-end encryption, administration, and European organisational control are central. Pilot notifications, guest access, moderation, and calls with real users.

Ownership, scope and the shortlist

This guide uses European in a precise, disclosed way. Some options are based in the EU, some elsewhere in Europe, and some are open-source projects whose jurisdiction depends on the host you choose. None of those labels automatically guarantees privacy, security, good labour practices, or a perfect fit.

Treat this page as a shortlist, not a verdict. Federal Europa does not rank countries or sell placement in this guide. The useful outcome is a more contestable European market in which people and organisations can switch, export their data, and keep more than one credible door open.
