A repairable phone and a wider European story
Fairphone is a commercial smartphone company from the Netherlands with an unusually clear proposition: a phone should be kept, opened, repaired, and supported for longer. Its current Fairphone (Gen. 6) uses a modular design, a replaceable battery, and separately sold spare parts. As reviewed on 8 September 2026, the base model was listed at €599, with a five-year warranty offer and software support promised until at least 2033.
That makes Fairphone a European smartphone, but not an all-European supply chain. The Gen. 6 uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, and modern phones depend on globally distributed chips, displays, cameras, minerals, manufacturing equipment, and software. European design, ownership, repair policy, and customer support are meaningful; they should not be turned into a false claim that every component comes from Europe.
What EU product rules require
The deeper European story is that Fairphone's long-running experiment now sits beside rules applying to every covered smartphone placed on the EU market. Since 20 June 2025, EU ecodesign requirements have addressed drop and scratch resistance, battery durability, disassembly, spare parts, operating-system upgrades, and professional repair access. Smartphones and tablets also carry a new energy label that includes a repairability class.
The numbers make the rules concrete. Covered batteries must withstand at least 800 charge-and-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of their initial capacity. Producers must make specified critical spare parts available within five to ten working days and continue availability for seven years after sales of the model end in the EU. Operating-system upgrades must be available for at least five years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market.
A second layer arrived through the EU directive promoting repair. Member states had to transpose and apply it from 31 July 2026. For products, including smartphones, that are covered by EU repairability requirements, manufacturers must offer repair within a reasonable time and for a reasonable price. The directive complements legal guarantees and ecodesign; it does not mean every repair is free or that accidental damage automatically becomes a warranty claim.
Beyond the minimum: benefits and limits
Fairphone still goes beyond the minimum in visible ways. A user-replaceable battery and modular parts can make common repairs less intimidating than a sealed handset. The company also sells a version with Murena's /e/OS and publishes material for alternative operating-system communities. But longevity is not created by screws alone: spare-part prices, diagnostic access, instructions, software quality, warranty terms, and the company's survival through 2033 all matter.
This is where pride should remain practical. Fairphone has not displaced the largest phone makers, and a €599 mid-range device will not suit every camera, performance, banking-app, workplace-management, or accessibility need. A replaceable part is useful only if it remains obtainable. A long support promise is valuable only if updates arrive securely and on time. Buyers should compare the actual model, not reward the mission without checking the product.
The wider success is bigger than one brand. Europe has used product rules to make durability information visible and to push repair access into the normal smartphone market. Fairphone helped prove that people would accept a thicker, modular device and keep asking why sealed products were treated as inevitable. Regulation can now raise the floor while specialised manufacturers keep testing how much higher the ceiling can go.
For a buyer, the best European choice may be a Fairphone, another model with a strong repair score, or simply keeping the phone already in hand for another year. The proud outcome is not a flag on a new box. It is a market in which batteries last, parts remain available, software support is measurable, and replacing an entire device becomes the last option rather than the default.
