The phone, software and supply chain

Jolla is shipping phones again. As reviewed on 8 September 2026, the Finnish company's shop said Jolla Phone deliveries began on 8 July, cumulative preorders had passed 15,000 units, and a further limited batch was being sold for November delivery. That is small beside the global smartphone market, but it moves the project from nostalgic concept to a product customers can judge.

The important part is not merely final assembly in Finland. Jolla develops and compiles Sailfish OS, a Linux-based mobile operating system that does not require a Google account. In a market dominated by Apple's iOS and Google's Android, maintaining a commercially usable European mobile platform is a form of technical capacity: interface design, security updates, application runtimes, device integration, and developer knowledge remain in an independent organisation.

The 2026 phone was defined through what Jolla calls a Do It Together process. Community members voted on specifications and features. The resulting device has Sailfish OS 5, a physical privacy switch, dual SIM, expandable storage, a user-replaceable 5,450 mAh battery, and a replaceable back cover. Jolla promises at least five years of operating-system support.

It is European without being autarkic. The published specification lists a MediaTek processor, Sony cameras, and memory configurations built from globally sourced components. Final assembly in Finland and European control of the operating system are significant, but they do not make the semiconductor or manufacturing supply chain wholly European. The honest sovereignty claim is control over important layers, not independence from every supplier.

Applications, production and commercial limits

Jolla's answer to the application problem is AppSupport, an Android runtime inside Sailfish OS. That can make messaging, banking, and everyday Android applications available without making Android the phone's primary operating system. Compatibility is not universal, however. Apps can depend on specific Google services, device certification, digital-rights systems, security checks, or hardware interfaces. Anyone considering the phone should test the exact apps they cannot live without.

The batch model reveals both discipline and fragility. Jolla takes a deposit, procures components for limited production runs, and offers published prices of €649 for 8/128 GB and €749 for 12/256 GB configurations. This reduces inventory risk for a small company facing volatile memory prices, but it also means longer waits, limited availability, and less retail support than buyers expect from a mass-market brand.

History argues for measured optimism. Jolla was founded in 2011 by former Nokia engineers, launched its first phone in 2013, and kept Sailfish alive through licences and ports to selected Sony Xperia devices. Its own support table records that the original Jolla Phone's last Sailfish release arrived in 2020. A five-year promise for the new hardware is valuable, but delivery cadence, security maintenance, spare parts, and company finances will determine what it means in practice.

What a European alternative can contribute

There is also a strategic lesson. Europe does not need every phone to run a European operating system. It benefits from keeping at least one credible team able to build and maintain one. Alternative platforms create skills, procurement choices, research paths, and pressure for interoperability. They can serve privacy-sensitive users and specialised institutional deployments even if they never match Android's or iOS's scale.

Jolla's achievement in 2026 is therefore specific: it converted community demand into production, retained control of its operating system, and put a repairable Finnish-assembled device into customers' hands. The next milestones are less cinematic—shipping each batch on time, publishing stable updates, supporting real apps, keeping parts available, and earning repeat buyers. That is how a comeback becomes an ecosystem.
